Barriers to obtaining safe, decent shelter are especially significant for those with insufficient income. Through Helping Hands, Iowa Valley Habitat for Humanity works to lower these barriers for families in Cedar, Iowa, Johnson, Louisa, and Washington Counties by overseeing affordable critical home repairs, accessibility modifications, emergency home repairs, and major appliance replacements.
- Critical Home Repairs | Restoring safety, stability, and dignity. Critical home repairs address major structural and mechanical maintenance, such as roof replacements, siding, and foundation work. They also address major whole-house systems—electrical, heating and cooling, and plumbing, preserving the integrity of homes and preventing families from being displaced.
- Accessibility Modifications | Building access and independence at home. Accessibility modifications make homes safer and more accessible—such as wheelchair ramps, widened doorways, grab bars, and accessible bathrooms, helping homeowners live independently and age safely in place.
- Emergency Home Repairs | Responding when families need us most. Emergency home repairs address immediate safety and health concerns—from burst pipes and electrical hazards to heating failures during Iowa’s harsh winters.
- Major Appliance Replacements | Bringing comfort and efficiency home. Major appliance replacements include installation of energy-efficient stoves, refrigerators, furnaces, and water heaters for families in need, ensuring homes remain functional and livable for years to come.
