FUNd Rai$e the Roof With the Ganoe$

About This Campaign

Iowa Valley Habitat for Humanity recently purchased the house attached to mine and is in the process of fixing it up. They repaired the roof and I am showing my gratitude by helping to raise funds to cover the cost of my side of the roof.  A donation of any amount is greatly appreciated.

Campaign to Support Iowa Valley Habitat for Humanity

We envision a world in which each person has a decent place to live. Locally, we partner with both current and future homeowners, local businesses, residents and social service organizations to construct and renovate safe, decent, affordable housing in Cedar, Iowa, Johnson and Washington Counties.  We also secure affordable financing so that homeowners in our program save thousands of dollars over the life of their mortgage.   Globally, we work to remove barriers to decent housing by supporting Global Village trips and tithing to Habitat for Humanity global builds.  Together with our community, Habitat homeowners gain the strength, stability and self-reliance needed to build better lives and stronger communities.

Armed with a can of liquid courage and a few weapons, I made my way the attic. It was a bad idea that left Michelle shaking her head and wondering whether “I do” was the right response. But I was beyond frustrated. In the last eight years I called the City Attorney, a contractor, my insurance agent, and City building inspectors. Nothing worked. And because nothing worked, the previous day a family of raccoons (they had overtaken the squirrels, who were kind enough to chew a hole through my drywall) that had taken up residence in my attic fell through the ceiling. Now that the raccoons no longer occupied the attic, the other critters were undoubtedly plotting a scheme to move-in. Rather than let them get settled and make a further mess of my once beloved home, I thought this was my opportunity to reclaim what once belonged to me. So, armed with a can of liquid courage and a few weapons, I made my way to the attic.

Approximately eight years prior to my “trip to the attic,” a tree fell on the roof of the abandoned house attached to mine. It left a good-sized hole that I paid to be patched. Over time, the patch failed and left the interior of the abandoned house exposed to the elements. Soon the house was filled with dirt, animals and filth. Eventually the animals made their way to my house and have been a source of stress, frustration, anger and sadness since.

Habitat for Humanity recently purchased the abandoned house and is in the process of renovating it. As part of the renovation, I am volunteering with Habitat to transform this abandoned house into a beautiful home for our new neighbors. In return, Habitat is providing a new roof for the entire structure, including my side. We are grateful to Habitat and in return I request that you support this fundraising campaign, which will help cover the costs of the new roof. If we work together to raise these funds, Habitat doesn’t have to carry the cost of our roof. This will free up money they need to help other hard-working people in our community. I invite you to read more about Habitat for Humanity’s work by visiting this link. Michelle, Madison, Jacob, Jackson and I are so relieved that the nightmare is coming to an end, and I thank you in advance for your generosity.

Thank you,

Phil
