We’re happy to announce that Iowa Valley Habitat for Humanity is building a home in honor of Katie (Hootman) Lammers, City High class of 1976, who has given greatly to our community.

Affordable housing is a serious issue in Johnson County, and Habitat helps fill this need. The 1976 Reunion Committee feels that supporting Katie and Habitat is a way to honor a classmate while also giving back to our hometown. You can do this by making a donation (see details below), and by sharing this page.

Contributions may also be mailed to, or dropped off at, Iowa Valley Habitat for Humanity: 2401 Scott Blvd. SE, Iowa City, IA 52240. Be sure to note “Class of ’76 project” in the memo line on checks. Every donation, no matter the amount, is appreciated. Thanks in advance to all who donate and/or pass this on.

    ABOUT KATIE
Katie Lammers has been selected as the honoree for Iowa Valley Habitat for Humanity’s 10th Women Build home. She fits right into the Habitat family as she has been in the remodeling business for 35 years. Katie and her husband, Dan, own Lammers Construction Services which has the largest staff of woman carpenters of any remodeling company in Iowa City. Katie has volunteered her time as well as her staff’s time on the construction of Habitat homes for 15 years. Katie also works with Kirkwood’s Carpentry program to host interns who have the chance to learn skills while working alongside her expert staff.

Equally as important as Katie Lammers’ long-term service to Iowa Valley Habitat for Humanity and her construction experience is her dedication and commitment to giving back to the community and supporting organizations that provide assistance to under-served populations. Katie stays active in volunteering her time with Iowa City’s Mayor’s Youth Empowerment Program (MYEP). She has served on the MYEP board as well as the board president. Each summer, Katie plans and coordinates a Summer Tennis Camp with the organization. The program allows MYEP to give tennis lessons to people with special needs.

    ABOUT WOMEN BUILD
Women Build is a program developed by Habitat for Humanity as a way to engage and empower women in construction. The goal is not meant to exclude men, but to include women who may not feel comfortable volunteering at a male-dominated construction site. Women Build has also served to highlight and honor the talented and hard-working women in our community.

Each year, IVHFH seeks an influential woman in the community to honor with the Women Build. The honoree works with a committee of women to raise $50,000 in local donations and recruit volunteers to construct a home alongside an approved Habitat applicant. Along with the efforts of the Women Build committee, a local family will partner with IVHFH to build an energy-efficient home that they will purchase with an affordable home mortgage. The Habitat homeownership program ensures that the household pays no more than 30% of their income to cover housing costs allowing more of their funds to be dedicated toward other essentials like education, health and transportation.

Katie and the Women Build committee encourage everyone, regardless of gender, to take part in any way they can, whether that is swinging a hammer, providing food for volunteers, making in kind donations or financial donations or registering to attend fundraising events.

    ABOUT THE FAMILY

In Support of Iowa Valley Habitat for Humanity
We envision a world in which each person has a decent place to live. Locally, we partner with both current and future homeowners, local businesses, residents, and social service organizations to construct and renovate safe, decent, affordable housing in Cedar, Iowa, Johnson, Louisa, and Washington Counties.  We also secure affordable financing so that homeowners in our program save thousands of dollars over the life of their mortgage.   Globally, we work to remove barriers to decent housing by supporting Global Village trips and tithing to Habitat for Humanity global builds.  Together with our community, Habitat homeowners gain the strength, stability, and self-reliance needed to build better lives and stronger communities.
